Antioxidants - Fighters of Cancer

Oxidants Produce Cancer

Oxidants are things like mercury and aluminum; elements which are poisonous for our bodies. The funny thing is that our body produces them, and, they happen to be a problem because when interacting with our cells, they can produce changes in their DNA structures, therefore creating diseases, like cancer.

What is cancer? In simple terms, cancer is caused by one cell who’s DNA was changed. This cancer cell is a little organism that doesn’t know when to stop growing. It just simply multiplies and multiplies without any boundaries. That’s why cancer has a tendency to spread.
Isn’t it funny how our body produces its own poison? Well, one thing the body does to keep oxidants, and other bad minerals, in check, is by accumulating them in the body’s fat. This explains why having large concentrations of fat is a problem…it is filled with poison.

Now, this doesn’t mean that we are all going to have cancer. What it does mean is that we all have a bit of poison resting in our body fat, and the people who have a pre-set tendency to develop cancer… well… the more fat they have accumulated, the higher their risk is of developing it.

So, evidently, our goal is to have the least amount of oxidants in our bodies possible. Losing weight and staying healthy is a great way to start.

Besides body fat, the other defense mechanism the body has is Antioxidants.

Antioxidants Fight Cancer

The National Cancer Institute said, 'Considerable laboratory evidence from chemical, cell culture, and animal studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer'.

Antioxidants neutralize oxidants. Our bodies have an internal natural balance of both. After all, oxidants are being produced all the time. The problem becomes when there are more oxidants than Antioxidants. This can happen due to bad eating habits.

So, simply stated: You have to consume a lot of Antioxidants. The question is: where do we find them? The answer is: Fruits and vegetables.

No wonder people talk so much about ‘eating healthy’ and ‘eating natural food’. It's simply maintaining the balance within your body. Actually, more common names of Antioxidants are Vitamin E, Vitamin C and beta carotene.

Taken from a study made in Tufts University in Boston, here’s a list of the things that have major quantities of Antioxidants. The ones at the top have the most ‘antioxidant qualities’:

Fruits:

  • Prunes
  • Raisins
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Plums
  • Oranges
  • Red grapes
  • Cherries
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Grapefruit, pink

Vegetables:

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Brussels sprout
  • Alfalfa sprouts
  • Broccoli Flowers
  • Beets
  • Red bell pepper
  • Onion
  • Corn
  • Eggplant

There are plenty of good books out there that describe easy recipes with these elements. Also, don’t forget to drink a lot of water. It’ll maintain a good stream of cleanliness in your body; help you eliminate fat and many other good things.

You can also find supplements and pills designed specifically for this purpose.

One expert, Dr. Gerhard Schrauzer of the University of California in San Diego, stated: ‘If every woman in America started taking selenium supplements or had a high-selenium diet, then within a few years the breast cancer rate in this country would drastically decline'.

Another expert, Dr. Larry Clark of the University of Arizona, said: '200 micrograms daily of selenium cut the rate of prostate cancer by 69% and lung cancer by 34%'.

Pretty interesting huh?
